It borders on Estonia to the west, Russia and Belarus to the east, Lithuania to the south and is separated from Sweden in the west by the Baltic Sea.

The people of Latvia speak mainly two different languages as their native tongues: Latvian, which is the official language of the state, and Russian, the language of the ethnic Russians. Russian is also spoken by many people from other ethnic groups living in Latvia. 81% of all Latvian inhabitants know Russian, and it is extensively used in everyday communication and in professional, business and personal relations with Russia and other neighbouring states.
